Experience living on board and really get to know the boat. Virtually all the course is hands on. You are the crew – without you the sails won’t go up and the boat won’t be steered.
RYA Competent Crew is one of the basic courses of the RYA system. It is the course for the beginner to learn the basics of sailing aboard a cruising yacht. It is also an ideal stepping stone for sailors from smaller boats to try yachting and for those who have already done some crewing but wish to obtain the competent crew certificate. You sleep on board in different ports, and at the end of the 5 days you will have become, as the name suggests, a competent crew member.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE
For this course no previous yachting experience is required. It is however highly recommended that you have theory knowledge up to the level of Essential Navigation and Seamanship before you start this course; it will help you to get much more out of this course, and deepen your knowledge about sailing at sea and the various aspects you will need to cope with.
CONTENT
You will be taught the fundamentals of crewing such as ropework, fire precautions and fighting, personal safety equipment, man overboard, emergency equipment, meteorology, seasickness, helmsmanship, general duties, manners and customs, rules of the road, nautical terms, sail handling and helming, as well as how to “live” in the environment of a cruising yacht. You sleep on board during the course and weather and tide permitting (because currently Covid regulations rule this out we will return to the harbor everyday), you will visit some interesting places and have an enjoyable holiday break.
